President's Message January 2012

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas with family and friends. We certainly enjoyed two masters Christmas functions in December. In an annual event not to be missed Tim and Tracey McConnon again generously mowed a track, moved the cows to another paddock and opened up their pleasant rural property to us at Stonor. Shane Mundy presented the usual top quality meat and members provided other luscious food. Special thanks to these kind donors!

The Wednesday night competitors also enjoyed a friendly chat over refreshments after the last meeting before Christmas. Track and field participation has been good and events have been well run due to Sue's smooth organisation. Thanks to Peter Fortune's coaching session the steeplechase was held for the first time in quite a while on a Wednesday night. High jumpers please note that we would like to build up the high jump event. Sue is also expecting a great response to the National Postal Relays being held from mid-January to end of February 2012 and we hope to repeat the fine performance of the 800m run and walk at the Briggs Classic on Saturday 4 February.

Heartiest congratulations to some outstanding record-breakers - adding to John Jago's world relay record mentioned last month is Jaye Hanson's Tasmanian record - 11.62 for the 100m on Reunion Day. We have some outstanding Tasmanian masters!

There is much to anticipate in the coming weeks. Sunday 8 January features the Australian and Tasmanian Half Marathon Championships held in conjunction with the Cadbury Marathon - events we are proud to run for competitors who come from all over Australia. On the same day masters will compete in the Bikes and Spikes Carnival at New Town and, later, on 5 February, the Richmond Carnival.

Our pentathlons will be held in conjunction with the Tasmanian Combined Events Championships on 14 and 15 January; Steve and Deb's Dolphin Sands gala event is 22 January and several members are training for the Oceania Championships in New Zealand in February.

We look forward to resuming our track and field program on Wednesday night, 11 January. Bring your postal relay entries and make this year's relays the best ever.

A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all.

President's Message November 2011

Our Season Launch was an enjoyable occasion that brought everyone together to celebrate the beginning of the track and field season. Wayne Mason gave an informative and entertaining talk on athletics with particular reference to our early history and his involvement in the first Hobart masters nationals. He reminded us too of the value of friendship and connections made in the process of participation in athletics.

Thanks to all who attended, especially to Wayne and others who made individual contributions to the evening. The launch is being followed up with coaching sessions for sprints, distance, high jump, and steeplechase (30 November) with a later session planned for race walking. At the time of writing we have had the first two sessions as part of Come and Try which has certainly introduced some very welcome new members to the club. Ray Quarrell and Peter Lyden each gave general and individual instruction to aspiring sprinters and distance runners, and have also indicated their willingness to follow up where requested. Their expertise is greatly appreciated. I do encourage new and existing members to train well to fully enjoy athletics, stay injury free and achieve your best performances.

Congratulations and well done to all masters who have run in the many events held in recent weeks. We have been well-represented in the Burnie Ten. A few commendable individuals who come to mind are Olivia Gillie in the Melbourne Marathon, Geoff Gibbons in the inaugural AS multi-event challenge and Suzy Cole and Brian Horton who were medallists in the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide. Marathon runner Shane Mundy impressed with a double-page spread in the Mercury surrounded by his colourful running shoes. What an advertisement for masters running! Note the Ouse fun run on November 6. The Cadbury Marathon, Tasmanian and Australian Masters Half Marathon are looming and, in a significant acknowledgement of the quality of our event, Tasmanian Masters have been awarded the half marathon to conduct for the next three years.

As armchair travellers we can all enjoy Jenny's photos of their trip after Sacramento and, closer to home, Kate's photos of Deal Island, following her article in the last issue.

This month we farewell our fun run director, Jack Buzelin. Thank you Jack for all your effort and enthusiasm in your contribution to our fun runs and we wish you bon voyage as you travel with your family through Europe.
